He has been described as “the most distinguished marine artist of his day.” His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and many other institutions around the world. He was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1907. Wyllie exhibited paintings and etchings at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, the Grosvenor Galleries, the Leicester Galleries, the New English Art Club, the Society of British Artists, and the Fine Art Society.
